When you’re mad about airplanes, you could be living the dream from as little as $484,000 for a four bedder with parking for the airplane just an hour’s drive from the CBD.
While some people hunt down how many car parks a home might have, aviation enthusiasts search for hangars and airstrips, and these Queensland homes deliver in bucketloads priced from as low as under half a million dollars to as much as $1.2m.
An hour’s drive west of Brisbane’s CBD is a four bedder on a large 2,345sq m block that comes with ample parking for small airplanes — in fact it has two hangars.
The property at 15 Continental Court, Gatton, is in the Gatton Airpark Estate with the agent Matt Kark of LJ Hooker Gatton describing it as being “very handy to take advantage of the aviation lifestyle”.
Five minutes drive from Gatton, you can taxi to your airplane parking straight off the estate’s 750m grass airstrip. If you don’t have that airplane yet, that’s some serious storage space or as Mr Kark states the hangars could be rented out to other enthusiasts.
The three bedroom bespoke house at 13 Continental Court, Gatton, is also for sale, priced at $825,000 and it too has a hangar to stash the plane.
This one’s on a 2,680sq m block and also has a quirky “cattery” attached to the laundry for the feline babies to play in.
Its 18m by 18m hangar is “capable of hangaring up to four aircraft”, according to its listing by Minus The Agent Sales, plus it has an office on the mezzanine level above.
About the same distance west of Brisbane was 17 Jamieson Road, Churchable — a 16.19 hectare property that has a classic four bedroom Queenslander, two granny flats, a hangar and its own 640m runway.
Agent Aneta Fuller of First Prestige Realty Brisbane described it as being a “great set up for aviators” and comes with two granny flats and a swimming pool.
The property also has seven water tanks, electric hot water, 20 5kv solar panels, a dam and the owner is willing to negotiate on specialty machinery that’s on site.
For enthusiasts wanting things on a grander scale, there’s always Merribinda which comes with its own airstrip, hangar, sheds, pool, four bedder and stables at 4 Allan Road, Blenheim.
The 41.68 hectare property was priced at $775,000 and according to a listing by agents
Julie McGlinn and Noel Thornberry of Gatton & Laidley Real Estate, it “was originally a small crop farm producing potatoes and sweet potatoes”.
The property has mango trees that are over 60 years old that still produce “hundreds upon hundreds of mangoes each year”, they said, as well as a Moreton Bay fig, Norfolk Pine and Poinciana.
Located just under an hour 20 minutes from Brisbane CBD, it’s set up for horses and aircraft with a 15m by 12m hangar and a 684m grass runway that can alternatively be used as a “quarter mile racetrack for horses”.
At the top end of the lifestyle homes with hangars — at the top end of the state — was an 84.9 hectare property that has its own airstrip, aircraft hangar with accommodation, machinery shed and house.
The Far North Queensland property at 152 Shiptons Flat Road, Cooktown, was billed as a “once in a lifetime opportunity for the aviation enthusiast” priced at $1.2m.
The home is just six years old but it’s the massive aircraft hanger that’s the star attraction with 324sq m under roof — about 252sq m of that in a lockup hangar that’s self-contained with 72 sqm of further covered space next to it.
Then there’s the runway — an 1,100m all weather grass airstrip with an overshoot that takes it to 1,600m total, with two wind socks, located just a 150km flight from Cairns Airport.
Agent Alli Paterson of Property Shop Cairns described it as being in a “rarely available and highly sought” location, 20 minutes from Cooktown, 2km from the infamous Lions Den Hotel and 22km from Archer Point beach.
“Live here full time or rent out the house for an income while you fly in for the weekend on a fishing trip and stay over in the two bedroom apartment,” was how Ms Paterson marketed it.
