A YOUNG family from Sydney will soon swap their small cottage for a sprawling Queenslander in the Brisbane suburbs.
They were the highest bidders for 9 Meecham St at Grange, snapping up the stunning four bedroom Queenslander on a 810 sqm block for $1.54 million.
Sarah, who only wanted to be known by her first name, said their Sydney home was just 190 sqm and had a significant mortgage attached to it, so the extra space for her growing family, plus the reduced financial pressure, would be welcomed.
The property, which had been owned by the vendors since 1982, changed hands at auction yesterday, which two of the six registered bidders vying for the house.
Led by Ray White auctioneer Phil Parker, bidding opened at $1 million, and was followed by two $100,000 bids and then four $50,000 bids before stalling at $1.4 million.
Private discussions between the potential buyers, the vendors and agents saw the highest bid raised to $1.54 milllion, where it was announced on the market and then sold within a matter of minutes.
“Raining, nice and cold, but a good crowd turned out and we had plenty of good bidding and a great result under the hammer,” Mr Parker said, saying the vendors, who are downsizing, were happy to meet the market.
“They bought a good house.”
Grange is undergoing a transformation, with many of its grand Queenslanders undergoing extensive renovations.
The median house sales has increased 26.6 per cent in the past five years, and is now $917,500, according to CoreLogic.
Sarah said she only saw the house the day before, but had been “following” the house and the suburbs for about 18 months.
She said they had wanted to make a “treechange” and move from Sydney to Brisbane, keen for a slower pace and a better lifestyle.
“My sister lives in the area and I knew Meecham St … I got my sister to go through and my husband came up for my brother’s bucks party last weekend so he saw it, and I am now here for the hen’s weekend so I was able to bid on it and luckily we got it,” Sarah said.
“We had a massive mortgage (in Sydney), a big looming mortgage over our heads, not much spaces, two little kids that want space so it was a push for space and lifestyle for us.
“My sister and brother live here, my parents are on the Sunshine Coast, my husband got a direct transfer with his job, so it was an easy choice.
“It is a lot of house for the price compared to Sydney.”
The two-storey house has dual living options, with a fully equipped kitchen, living area, bathroom and bedroom on the lower level, plus a study/bedroom. There is also access to the patio and the pool.
Upstairs there are two more bedrooms, including the master bedroom with its ensuite and walk-in robe, the kitchen has a servery window that opens on to the impressive covered deck, a living room and a separate dining area.
Outside there is a pool and a pool house.
