Architect Camilla Block’s Bondi semi sells $400k above reserve at hot auction

8 Ewell St, Bondi, has sold at auction today for $2.95 million — $400,000 above the reserve price.

Architect Camilla Block knocked back an offer of $2.55 million on her Bondi semi on Thursday night. It’s sold at auction for $400,000 more than that at auction today.

McGrath Coogee principal Mark McPherson and his colleague Emilee Tayyara were stunned at the $2.95 million sale price for the residence Ms Block redesigned eight years ago at 8 Ewell St.

“The vendor was seriously considering accepting the offer on Thursday night, but fortunately she accepted my recommendation to let it run to auction,” Mr McPherson said.

8 Ewell St, Bondi has a classic original facade.

With auctioneer James Hayashi presiding, all four who registered competed.

Bidding had started at $2.3 million.

The next one was $2.5 million.

And then three parties fought it out to the end, all young families.

Although the property had four bedrooms and three bathrooms, this is big money for a home with no off-street parking.

A deck opens to a north-facing back yard.

But as you would expect from an architect’s own home, the design is pretty special — a clever combination of unique architectural features with period detail.

The living area features a slow combustion fireplace and adjacent dining area.

Glass stacker doors open to a covered timber entertainment deck and there’s a landscaped back yard that’s full of sun since it faces north.

There’s a funky kitchen.

There’s a funky gas kitchen with a Smeg oven and dishwasher.

And three of the four bathrooms have built-in wardrobes.

The master suite on the first floor has a library area between the bedroom and the ensuite.

And the self-contained studio at the rear of the property would make an excellent guest quarters.

CoreLogic indicates Ms Block bought the 266 sqm property for $655,000 in 2000 and a DA was approved for additions and alterations worth $70,000 in 2006.

Mr McPherson was tight-lipped about Ms Block’s next move, though it’s known that Mr McPherson has just sold a larger home in Cross St, Bronte, for just under $5 million and sources say Ms Block was the buyer.
