Saluministi sandwich shop co-owner Peter Mastro selling Essendon home


A co-owner of hot sandwich shop Saluministi has listed his home at 96 Ogilvie St, Essendon.

The Essendon home of Saluministi co-owner Peter Mastro has been served up to the market.

Mr Mastro — who founded the popular Italian sandwich business with brother-in-law Frank Bressi in 2012 — said the kitchen at his 96 Ogilvie St residence had been the site of plenty of prep work for Saluministi.

The pair now runs two cafes on Flinders Lane and in Docklands, plus an in-demand catering service, and is famous for its porchetta paninis.

“We’ve translated our home recipes into a business, so others can experience that second generation Italian food we love,” Mr Mastro said.

He and his wife Vittoria bought their three-bedroom house in 2006, when CoreLogic records show it fetched $351,000.

It was their first home, and they went on to gut the interior and give it a “full facelift”.

“Structurally, we didn’t touch anything. But we brought it into the 21st century,” Mr Mastro said.

This included installing a top-notch kitchen with Smeg and Fisher & Paykel appliances, a new bathroom, backyard deck, solid hardwood floors and stone benchtops, and replacing most of the plaster.

The Mastros are due to auction the single-level pad — where they’ve raised their kids, Luca, 10, and Milla, 7 — on October 19 with $1.05-$1.15 million price hopes.

Mr Mastro said he’d miss the “closeness and intimacy” offered by the compact home.

But he and his wife were selling up because they “feel like it’s time for a project”.

“We want to renovate something that’s a bit more us, a bit more Melbourne, (perhaps) a warehouse conversion,” he said.

At the top of his list was creating a kitchen with a large kitchen bench where he could “set up all my antipasto, all my food” and stand around talking with family and friends.

The deep backyard has been a drawcard.

Nicole Gervasi Real Estate director Nikki Gervasi said prospective buyers were “in love with the big backyard”, which was unusually deep for Essendon and offered plenty of space to extend the house into, if a buyer chose to.

“It’s a really neat renovation,” she added.

Young families and downsizers are circling the pad.
