Why taking a punt can pay off

THERE are not too many homes in Brisbane where you can watch a horse race from your back deck, but that’s what makes this one so special.

Lucy and Gary Beikoff are by no means avid punters, but they saw the potential to embrace the sport of kings with their latest renovation project in Hendra.

The couple had been waiting to look at another property when they drove past 15 Raceview Avenue and saw it was open for inspection.

“We thought we might as well stop and have a look,” Mrs Beikoff said.

“The minute we walked on to the back balcony, Gary said; ‘This is the one!’

“We saw the view and how we could open up all the living areas to maximise that view.”

Mrs Beikoff said they were also attracted to the fact the house was on a large, 856 sqm block.

They were so impressed, they bought it that day.

Fortunately, the house was in reasonable condition, but the Beikoffs wanted to give it a modern makeover that was still in keeping with the character of the home.

“It was a bit dated, the kitchen had lino on the floor, all the verandas had been enclosed and aluminium sliders put on the windows,” Mrs Beikoff said.

It wasn’t the Beikoffs’ first renovation as they had previously restored a Queenslander in Clayfield.

“With these homes on big blocks, we like to retain the size of the block and then do the renovation in keeping with the style of the house,” Mrs Beikoff said.

“There’s still a really strong racing community in this pocket of Hendra, so we decided to retain the stables out the back and restore them in keeping with the racing community.”

The stables were gutted and converted into a self-contained apartment, featuring a bedroom, a kitchenette, a bathroom and a lounge room.

But it was the view of Doomben race track to the Gateway Bridge beyond that the Beikoffs really wanted to maximise.

They knocked down a wall dividing the kitchen and lounge and added an extension to allow them to create a large, open-plan living and dining area with high ceilings and louvres, opening out to a new back deck.

“It’s great for entertaining — particularly on race days,” Mrs Beikoff said.

“For the 1300m race, they bring the starting barriers just outside our place so we can watch from the deck.”

They installed a new kitchen, complete with Caesarstone benchtops, SMEG

appliances and a walk-in butler’s pantry.

They kept the original formal living room where it was, but pulled out the bathroom and turned it into an ensuite off the upstairs bedroom.

The second upstairs bedroom was closed off to accommodate the butler’s pantry.

In keeping with true Queenslander tradition, they reopened the verandas, which had been closed in to accomodate sleepouts.

They also installed an internal staircase.

Underneath the house was already at legal height, which made it easier for the Beikoffs to build underneath.

They created two bedrooms, a rumpus room, renovated the existing bathroom downstairs,

then added a master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.

As a nod to the racing theme, they installed a barn door separating the master bedroom from the ensuite.

Throughout the house, the original timber flooring was sanded back and restained and the Beikoffs took extra care to make sure the floorboards in the extension matched the originals.

Outside, they installed a swimming pool and poolhouse, and landscaped the entire yard themselves.

“There wasn’t much of a garden to start with so I planted a lot of cuttings from our previous garden and planted a couple of poinsiana trees out the front,” Mrs Beikoff said.

“I think the garden is just as important as the house when it comes to creating that nice feel.

“We spent lots of hours staggering around laying turf!”

Other features include VJ walls, Carrara marble benchtops in all four bathrooms, ducted air-conditioning, a double garage and a garden shed.

The property is for sale through Patrick McKinnon and Stefan Blee of Place – Ascot.
